Sonya Kancheva was the first singer from Varna region who revealed to the listeners from all over the country the beauty and wealth of musical folklore from Northeast Bulgaria. Her repertoire embraces the most characteristic metric, melodic and ritual diversity of the region while the lyrics to the songs she performs are genuine gems of folk poetry. The singer’s beautiful voice, her vocal mastery and artistry rank her among the greatest names of the art of folk singing. Her performances of `Lyube, lyube, parvo lyubo` (My Sweetheart, my First Sweetheart), `Yaobyadvai, mamo` (Eat You Dinner, Mother), `Yankin brat Yanki dumashe` (Yanka’s Brother Said to Yanka), `Tez malkite momi` (Oh, Those Young Girls), among many others, are still favourites to several generations of Bulgarians and a paragon of artistic taste to which we always return whenever looking for the pure source.
