Signal
|
In June 1978 Yordan Karadjov, Hristo Lambrev, Rumen Spasov, and the drummer Georgi Kokalanov formed the rock group Signal.
It was the song `Mozhe bi` (May be) that immediately made them one of the groups most listened to at the time. The song was composed by Toncho Rusev. But it was not that much the song itself that the group used, rather it was its canto. Because Signal always rearrange any music in their own way, and usually thus their hits are born. This song `Mozhe bi` for example had been performed by Donika Venkova, but nobody now knows this fact, because she had had no success with it.
Toncho Rusev had met the group in the National Radio during the review of the `New Bulgarian music` and had offered them the song. Then Toma Sprostranov played it in `Pulsirashti noti`(Pulsing notes) and it was then the magic of Signal began. It was a paradox that `Mozhe bi` had such a popularity that even had a German version - ` JaVilaih`, but has never been awarded in Bulgaria. In fact, even now 7 or 8-year-old children sing the song at the concerts and know the text by heart.
Vladimir Zahariev replaced Georgi Kokalanov behind the drums,so a drummer with sharp and fresh musical ideas reinforced Signal. It was the beginning of the first golden era in the artistic carrier of the group. The four members lived through many successful moments on the one hand and hard times on the other. Organizer and manager in these first years was Stefan Shirokov
In the beginning of the nineties Rumen Spasov left the group, and the young guitarist Aleksandar Marinovski was accepted in it.
Yordan Karadjov usually has the ideas of the future songs, he makes up their melodies and the canto, while Hristo Lambrev vests them in harmony and they both arrange them in order real hits to be born. In the recent years Aleksandrov Marinovski also has taken part in arranging the songs, especially in the acoustic album `Tsvetia` (Flowers) which is in the popular nowadays `unplug` style.
An interesting event happened on 10 of February 1882. During a concert in Bourgas the militia began to hit people from the excited audience. It was one of the first official presentations of rock music discrimination in Bulgaria. Yordan Karadjov grabbed the microphone and started defending the young people. The militia were furious and spoiled the concert. After this accident the musicians also suffered. For a year they had been out of television, radio and all spheres of music life. The members of the group, however, managed to live through this period of exile and never gave up.
Signal was awarded in the International festival for popular songs in Dresden. They wan first award for performance. In the Golden Orpheus they wan two awards: in 1979 they wan third award for the song `Ne kazvai ne`(Don’t say no), music Hristo Lambrev, text Milcho Spasov, and in 1992 – for `Kasno predchustvie`(Late presentiment).
In the nineties Signal has been going on moving forward, proving their professionalism. They have been singing in the clubs, making tour after tour, producing album after album – everything that characterizes the successful artistic carrier. All these years they do their best to make an atmosphere appropriate for the transformation of the fans, this transformation should be slow and smooth, from the father-fans to their children.
This is the rock legend Signal! They have had more than 4000 concerts not only in Bulgaria, but also in Czech Republic, Germany, SSSR, and Cuba. They have produced 12 albums each of which was a bestseller for its time. Their was also the first double album published in Bulgaria.
