Kamelia

Kamelia’s career started in 1997 when Plamen Velinov helps her to enter into a contract with Payner Music Company, which was gaining popularity at the time. The first recordings of the young singer appeared in the compilation `Folk Casino` - Idi si (Go away), Griah li e tova (Is this a sin?), and of course the debut mega-hit Istinski mazh (A real Man). Still the first time Kamelia appeared on the Bulgarian pop-folk stage she was declared by the public to be one of the most sexy and attractive performers.

During the next year, 1998, the work and preparation over the debut album came to an end and in September it was released. `Ogan momiche` reached the number of 90 000 sold copies. These professional triumphs, however, didn’t make her proud and haughty. On the contrary, she made it her ambition to produce still a better album. And it did appear - in December, under the name of `Zlatna Ribka` (Golden Fish).

The very carefully chosen repertoire in the album made the interest of the public turn upon it and in no time the sales of the album reached and overpassed those of the new albums of Gloria and Reni. In this competition Kamelia no doubt managed to be the best. Her songs never stopped being played in the discos and her fans constantly increased. Such a stir was about her that it went around in the pop-folk sphere that she was going to replace Gloria as `the greatest in the pop-folk`.

In August the album `Zlatna Ribka` reached the number of 10 000 sold CDs and about 4 times more MCs, which made it `a golden album`.

In the end of 2001 the first maxi-single in the Bulgarian pop-folk came into being. It was of Kamelia, of course, and included pop-folk, rap, dance, Latino, and house versions of the song Kade si ti (Where are you?). All of them were performed with great professionalism. Despite the existing pessimism before releasing the maxi-single, it later appeared out that the risk had been worth taking. All the 3000 copies of the first circulation were sold out within 3 days only!

With Kade si ti (Where are you) Kamelia participates at the International Pop-Folk Festival in Varna `Golden Mustang 2001`, at which the singer performs the song 4 times in 3 days. At this festival she won the public recognition for her work. She received 3rd award for a song, 3rd award for a video, and of course the award of the public which is the dearest for any artist.

The other composition which gained wide popularity in the end of 2001 is a duet with the Serb Dule Resavac. This song made Kamelia famous in Serbia as well as she was at home. Pink TV invited her to interview her. For them she sang the dance version of Kade si ti on the air. This was the first Bulgarian author song which had been broadcasted by Pink TV.

In March 2002 Kade si ti grabbed the prize `Hit of 2001`, and in April was released the third long-waited Kamelia’s album `Neshto goreshto`(Something Hot). It must be the most precisely and massively promoted Payner musical product. The advertising campaign started weeks before its coming on the market. The album broke all records of fast sales.

The first hit from this album was the provocative song Redni ili neredno (Right or wrong) The piece became a hot in no time since all the clubs and cafes started playing it every half an hour. Its temperament perfectly suited the hot summer season in which it became popular. It reached the No 1 in the chart for the best hits in South Bulgaria Discos, prepared by the well known DJ Jerry. 3 weeks the song ranked first.

The success this first single might be thought to be weak compared to ths of the second one in the album. Zalezat i zorata (The sunset and the dawn) was released as the second single from `Neshto goreshto` and the truth is that it conquered Bulgaria. This mega-hit became emblematic for 2002, ranking high and for long in all music charts. `I’m really proud of Zalesa i zorata, because this song turned out to be the biggest author hit for the year. When I see someone crying while I sing it, I feel happy; because I know then I’ve done a good jog` says Kamelia. This balladic hit is thought by her keenest fans to be the best in Kamelia’s career.

The third hit in this album is the ballade Iskash da se varna (You want me come back) sang in a duet with the Greek Sakis Kukos. While shooting the pictures for the video in Solon a Greek TV journalist called Kamelia `the Bulgarian Anna Vissi`.

On 17th of November Kamelia sang in Oval Hall in London. According to an inquiry among the Bulgarian emigrants in the British capital the fire-girl appeared to be the most preferred singer. This was the reason she was the first to be invited there. There were so many who wished to watch her that 400 people could not enter the Hall at all. The performance was well liked by the public and in 2003 Kamelia was again invited for a concert in London.
